"Through The Eyes"
Sometime in 2001 Thorsten asked me if I want to release their debut LP „...from inside“. At the time I was running a small DIY label called Matula Records and in my eyes Bubonix were already a big deal back then. Musically, they were worlds apart and so much better than the noise coming out of the other rehearsal rooms in the region. Their hardcore sound wasn't just blunt banging, the songs had dynamics, were written in a surprising and diverse way and never shied away from the well-trodden paths of punk and hardcore. And above all, they were unique. Bubonix are not a band that sounds like ......... (please fill in a random band name), but Bubonix is the band that the others want to sound like.
Bubonix gigs were a revelation and nothing has changed since then. No matter in which line-up I've watched them, it was never business as usual or a show routinely played with the hand-brake on, after which band members high-five each other backstage with the words: „Stably delivered“. Bubonix concerts are exciting, they are intense and they are filled with sweaty energy, but they are also friendly and respectful. They are total devotion, which, in the past, lead to self-destructive features, when Thorsten went through his lyrics on stage, chatising himself. But this celebrated self-destruction was never nihilistic, it was always catharsis. And it was the certainty: If Thorsten can fight his demons on this stage, then I can fight mine as well. „Bring ein bisschen Optimismus mit. Wir schaffen das schon. Zusammen.“
